Members
The Valdez Planning and Zoning Commission is a seven member board, appointed by the City Council. Each member serves a three year term. The commissioners serve in an at large capacity meaning they represent the community as a whole rather than a specific region or area. The commission members are:

Authority & Responsibilities
Alaska State law requires that home rule, first and second class boroughs, unified municipalities, and first class and home rule cities outside of boroughs provide planning, platting and land use regulation. The Planning Commission is a body of citizens that serve local government. The commission is an advisory group to the governing body on issues and activities related to planning, platting, and land use regulation and community development in general. The Planning Commission is responsible for keeping planning and land use-related topics and issues in perspective for the community and should not become lost in the daily decisions and details of life. Additional Duties
The City of Valdez is a home rule city outside of a borough, and therefore, is required by state law to have a planning commission. Section 3.7 of the Charter of the City of Valdez provides for the commission. The composition and duties of the commission are further outlined in Chapter 2.52 of the Valdez Municipal Code.
